What are the best practices and products to use to get that Summer glow year around?
Let just say not all products are created equal when it comes to achieving smooth skin especially when color is an issue. For all my dark skin girls out there, I sometimes struggle to get the results I want especially if those products are also non-toxic and vegan.

(editors note: can we just appreciate this gorgeous ray of sunshine that is Mika?)

Before we move on chatting about products recommendations and discuss what does what, let me tell you about myself. By now you should realize it is not the beautiful Rhian.

I am Michaelle, Rhian was so kind to invite me to her blog today. Isn’t she the best? (note: i swear i didn't make her say that) I am also a blogger @ethicalandchic.I love talking about food, makeup, and green beauty products. I am vegan, of course!

Since I love makeup and like any other girl, I always like to look my best, I tend to try out a lot of products. Sometimes it tends to get out of hand. My bank account sometimes looks like it has been on a-crackers-and-water diet only!

I for one love glowing skin all year around. Ashy skin is so out! After tons of trials and errors, I have a routine and a few products that not only make my skin look healthier but gives it a beautiful glow. Don’t worry, it’s nothing high maintenance! You are probably doing most of them already!

You want your best skin ever? Here are my top ways to get that Summer Glow now! Women of color friendly.

  • Realistically, good skin starts with what we put inside our body and our environment. If you are into eating dairy and no actual healthy food, you need to get on that shit like yesterday! Load your plates with greens foods, fruits, and vegetables. Eating them in season is cheaper, more accessible, and they taste better!
  • Drink plenty of water, get some appropriate shut eyes time and get your body moving. I personally do yoga and kettlebells. I also love walking and biking when the weather allows.
  • Also stay away from the harsh sun and stop touching your face! I am guilty of those last two. The warmth of the sun feels so good especially when I haven’t been out in a while, I like just to soak it all up like a lazy feline! That's why a great SPF is necessary.

What’s in your skincare and beauty routine?

To get that summer glow, I tend to favor products with simple ingredients, targeted toward my needs. No sulfates, hard perfumes, and pore-clogging ingredients.

I use a cleanser, a toner, an essence, a serum, and a moisturizer. Petit Vour has products for all these categories. They have samples available! I also browse Ulta, Sephora, and The Detox Market for new finds.

I am a strong believer in the virtues of acids (AHA, BHA). I use them all over my body. I find chemicals exfoliant give the skin a smoother appearance faster and long-lasting.

Some of Mika's top picks!

Products recommendations.

To get that summer glow year around while I keep my skin even, I use a tanning lotion. Yes, you heard me right! A tanning lotion helps me fake it until I make it! Tanning lotion does necessarily make your dark skin dark instead it evens out the complexion and hide imperfections like stretch marks, scars, etc... It’s not going to be perfect unless you already have great skin, but it will be close enough!

My go-to tanning lotion is the Loving Tan mousse. It applies evenly, leaves my skin smooth, and gives me that chocolate glow. I use the dark in Winter and the ultra-dark in Summer. Don’t forget to exfoliate, shave, and hydrate your skin the day before you use the Loving tan mousse for a perfect application!

You probably see the Fenty beauty lava body luminizer everywhere now! While it looks quite nice, I must say it has nothing on the Prtty Peaushun skin tight body lotion. It’s 100 percent natural, vegan, fragrance-free, non-toxic, paraben free, and gluten-free. It gives the skin a natural looking glow, no glitter chunks, no greasy residue. It’s also lightweight. I sometimes use it on my face as a primer before foundation and concealer for a natural, soft makeup look. It’s just so beautiful!

For bronzer, I usually use the 100 Percent Pure Cocoa Pigment Bronzer. It’s enough to warm up my face for a natural look. If I am looking for something dramatic, I use the Alima Pure Powder Foundation in C9. Just a little bit! The Au Naturale Organic Bronzer in Warm is a great one too. It never makes me breakout.

For highlight, I use the Au Naturale Luminous Crème Bronzer Stick in Trailblazer. A little goes a long way. Always make sure it’s well blended to avoid weird patchy looking spot of glitters. For a smooth and natural look, I always reach for Antonym Baked Blush in Copper. That’s a holy grail product right here ladies! The Milani Baked Bronzer in 05 Soleil is quite similar and more affordable although a bit more shimmery.

I tend to stick with what works for my complexion and skin type. I am pretty sure you have different products in your arsenal and a different approach when it comes to getting that summer glow. What are your go-to products to get that Summer glow? What is your skincare routine? Let’s keep the conversation going in the comment below!

(editors notes: Affiliate links are used. A huge thank you to Mika for contributing to my blog, she was a joy to work with and i really hope you'll all check her out in her social media links.)

Every time i think Petit Vour can't out-do themselves... they, um... they do it! This month's vegan & cruelty free subscription box from my favorite vegan online store is AMAZING. Lets dive in.

If you're unaware, Petit Vour is a luxury monthly, vegan and cruelty free beauty subscription box. Its a great way to discover new products and brands knowing that everything is suitable for your vegan and cruelty free needs.

Modern Minerals Lip Creme Tint. Full size: $20

I'll admit, when i first saw this i thought the color was NOT me but its so sheer that its actually quite wearable, just the hint of a tint! Its very light on the lips and although it doesn't stick around for long, it is nice and hydrating so i don't feel i have to immediately apply more (i'm a chronic over-applier of lip product usually).

The packaging is SUPER cute and i'd love to carry one of these in my purse or travel bag for a quick swipe of hydration and flush of pink.

Mai Couture Rosehip Oil Blotting Paper. $10

The chicest packaging. WOW, another cute handbag staple!

Don't typically care about blotting papers it between the packaging and the skincare properties... I'm hooked and feel like a chic old movie star when i use them. They also have a bunch of other blotting paper options including bronzing ones and even salicylic acid which i'll definitely be picking up to travel with.

Niu Body Makeup Remover Wipe. Full size: $15

I really wasn't sure what to expect but was pleasantly surprised by how luxurious and effective these were.

The wipe itself is very strong and holds a good amount of the oil so I was able to do my whole face and neck.

I expected my face to look very oily after using it but was pleasantly surprised it was just slightly glowy. I'd LOVE to take this on a flight as a protective treatment during long-hauls.

My Daughter Fragrances Bloom 23 Perfume. Full size: $85

Notes: Gardenia, Jasmine, Rose, Vanilla & Sandalwood

I've been wanting to try these scents for a while so i was so excited it was included in this month's box.

Its definitely a lovely scent and very fresh, fruity & sexy. I think i might try and get samples of the rest of the My Daughter fragrances before i invest in a full size but so far i am LOVING Bloom 23.

All in all i'm super stoked on this month's box and love that Petit Vour are continually adding more and more awesome brands and products to their store.

Buying as a vegan or for a vegan can be tough sometimes, so allow me to introduce you to my secret weapon, Petit Vour.

Many of you have probably heard me talk about their subscription boxes or seen one of my haul videos but for those unaware, Petit Vour are a vegan cruelty free hub for all things beauty and lifestyle.

They carry such a wide range of products at all different price points so they're the perfect place to go for gifting ideas. I've shared my top picks in 3 price ranges below to give you some ideas...

$20 and under

100% Pure Bright Eyes Mask - $7 : These are the perfect stocking stuffer or reward treat (y'know, for all those awesome gifts you've picked for your loved ones) and a staple fix for all things in my house. Power out? Bright Eyes. Election stress? Bright Eyes. One too many mulled wines? Bright Eyes.
They are formulated to help depuff, brighten and hydrate and i love keeping a couple in the fridge for any such emergencies. (pictured)

Ellovi Lip Butter Collection - $18 : I don't think theres a single human out there who wouldn't benefit from a lip balm restock, especially for us Northern Hemisphere dwellers battling the winter dryness this season. Ellovi butters are nourishing, delicious and packaged in the most streamlined way. Perfect for lip balm lovers or a panicked secret santa option!

Rifle Paper Co Travel Journal - $15 : This is the perfect little gift for the avid traveler in your life or someone who is about to embark on a new life in a far away land. They also have regular journal options and some gorgeous wrapping sets.

$20 - $35

Little River Sock Mill Socks - $15 - $25 : I know some people dread receiving socks but theres not much i enjoy more and i can't be the only one who feels this way... right? Little River have lots of different prints and styles from footies to knee-highs and are all made right here in the USA. (pictured)

Moon Juice Power Dust - $30 : Many of us know (or maybe are) that person who drinks endless coffee but never quite gets what they want from it, so why not encourage trying something new by gifting them some Power Dust? Moon Juice create lots of different powder blends targeted to different moods or organs and they taste delicious!

Widu Wooden Bristle Brush - $25 : Widu create handmade Italian brushes and combs designed not only to detangle that mop but also to massage your scalp. This little travel sized option comes in different colors and i'd have to say the robin egg blue is my favorite.

$35 - $50

Poetic Blend Ghost Oil - $50 : Most gothic skin care award goes to.... Ghost Oil! All joking aside, this is a truly gorgeous product and "ghost oil" is right, is really does vanish without a trace leaving your skin feeling perfectly happy and balanced. Whether you're buying this for the skin care fanatic in your life, or the perfectly curated human who lives for an Instagram flat-lay, this is a beautiful product both to give and receive. (pictured)

Osmia Himalayan Body Buff - $42 : A chic twist on the traditional gift of bath and body products, this scrub is a lovely way to keep your skin glowing all winter long.

Lite + Cycle Lavender Candle - $48 : Another gorgeous more traditional gift item is this pillar candle. It's lavender scent is perfectly soothing and relaxing for anyone getting ready to embrace hibernation this winter!

Hopefully this gave you some gift ideas to work from but if you're still not sure, they also offer a Petit Vour gift card and they have a wonderful subscription box thats ideal for anyone embarking on a cruelty free or vegan journey and wants to try out lots of gorgeous new items every month.

Lets take a lil looky inside this month's Petit Vour vegan and cruelty free beauty box, i show you the items in the video as well as mini written reviews!

Lily Lolo Sculpt & Glow
I'm super excited to add this to a future giveaway since i already have this product and even have a review on it you can check out if you'd like to.

Overall its a really convenient little contour and highlight palette with great shades in! I'm so stoked they included it in this months box and think a lot of people will LOVE it.

Formulary 55 Body Polish
I decided to mix mine with coconut oil as it suggested and it made a really nice scrub. The grains are fine and do a good job of exfoliating without being too scratchy and the oil added left me super moisturized.

The scent wasn't very strong at all but still fresh and soothing. I definitely think this would be a lovely treat once in a while or a nice little gift for your perpetually stressed out friend/family member.

True Moringa Lavender Facial Oil
I wasn't really sure this was something i'd love right away but applied after a hot bath and some toner, it left my skin feeling moisturized and firm. It didn't feel like traditional oils that can feel almost too slippery when applied and sunk in very quickly.

Definitely a great option if you want to try a facial oil but don't want to feel... oily.

Box Naturals Luxe Towelettes
Now, i'm very picky about wipes or towelettes and can't stand those flimsy ones you end up poking a finger through. Luckily, these are not like this; the towel itself is thicker, strong and stretchy as well as being a decent size!

Like i mentioned in the video, i'm not usually into products designed for "intimate use" not only because they can throw your delicate pH off balance but because i think its weird that some people feel shame about a very natural thing... body odor. I think thats why these appealed to me more because they can be used ANYWHERE but you know they're safe for your downstairs if needed!

Reading their website, i fell in love with the fact they identify as feminists and really want to celebrate that and i think thats a really refreshing thing for a company to state so freely.

These should all be available to buy in full sizes at their store soon so i'll update the individual products as soon as they are. In the meantime, you can sign up for your own Petit Vour subscription box here or check out their store here (be warned, theres LOTS of good stuff).

This video is not sponsored and affiliate links are used above, meaning i receive a small % of sales made via them without any changes to the price you pay. Choosing to shop via these links helps support my channel but you’re under no obligation to use them!
I've been so excited to share these gorgeous luxe vegan and cruelty free items with you. All of which i found on Petit Vour's store... thats right, they're more than just a subscription box.

Petit Vour are my favorite vegan beauty box and introduce me to so many new companies i've not heard of before. Lets see what was in this past month's box...

Juice Beauty Green Apple SPF 15 Moisturizer - $38
When i first applied this, it struck me how thick it seemed when rubbing it into the skin so i assumed it wouldn't be a good fit for my oily/combination skin. Within a minute it had completely sunk into my skin and left the nicest matte base that was hydrated and plumped at the same time.

I'm going to keep this for use when we're hiking or times when i don't want to apply makeup because it gives such a nice matte finish by itself that i felt pretty confident in my skin even without makeup.

EVOLVh Smart Volume Leave In Conditioner - $27
Typically i don't have great results with similar products and find they either give no (noticeable) results or make my fine hair very heavy and dirty-feeling. Again, i was pleasantly surprised.

I applied it to damp hair, combed it through with my fingers then wrapped my hair up in my Aquis towel. While blow drying i noticed my hair had some thickness and texture without being weighed down; i guess thats where the "SmartVolume" comes in? I also noticed my hair retained its volume and style after sleeping on it too which is usually an area of frustration for me.

I'll definitely be using this tester up over the next few weeks and potentially ordering the full size!

Suntegrity Lip CPR SPF30 - $28 (top to bottom shades are sunburst pink & sunny blush)
The two little samplers of lip product are something i'd usually overlook but i'm so glad i swatched these for you guys because i actually fell in love with the product.

SPF lip products have a reputation for leaving a strange cast on the lips, even tinted ones. These are the most hydrating, plumping lip colors i've tried and the fact it has SPF in is just an amazing bonus.

The ingredients definitely give you a lasting feeling of lip health even after its eventually worn off, i loved these so much i ended up ordering the shade "sunrise peach" in the full size!

Precious Skin Elixirs Exfoliating Clay - $70
The first thing i noticed about this was the gorgeous packaging (if you appreciate the packaging on the mini, check out the full size- g'damn) so i had high hopes for it because thats just how my brain works.

I tried this a few times and each time just didn't feel like it did much, i'm not sure if i didn't mix it with the right powder to water ratio or if its just not suited to my skin but i really didn't notice much of a difference.

Perhaps if you had very sensitive skin and aren't used to more "aggressive" exfoliators, this might be great but it just didn't do it for me. I'll definitely use it up and see if my opinion changes.

Overall another great box from Petit Vour that helped me discover some products i wasn't aware of.
Be sure to check out their store (i may have spent way too much there last night- let me know if you'd like a haul) and consider their beauty box if you're new to vegan beauty or just want to discover some new gems.

If you're into luxe vegan products, you might be into this.

Graydon Hair Smoothie

  • Saving this one for travel but the reviews on PV are very positive!

Juice Beauty Stem Cellular Booster Serum

  • After using this serum twice, i'd already decided i liked it. I then realized it had hyaluronic acid in it (my favorite) so it all made sense after that.
  • This is an interesting texture for a serum and is much more of a gel consistency which felt really good being applied to the skin.
  • It layered well beneath day or night creams as well as makeup so if you're looking for a new serum to try, this one is awesome!

Christy Organics Trance Perfume

  • A very fresh, floral, natural scent!
  • It's jojoba oil base means the scent will wear well on the skin and you only need the smallest amount.
  • These might be good to check out if you're sensitive to synthetic scents because they're made of 100% natural plant ingredients.

Han Skincare Cosmetics Eyeshadow in Taupey Plum

  • Gorgeous shade that blends out well and packs on beautifully for more opacity.
  • It contains anti aging ingredients so you can feel content knowing your  makeup is actually helping your skin for once!
  • Check my instagram for a photo example.

You can get your own Petit Vour subscription box here or check out their store here.

If you'd like to see December's box contents, check here. If you came to see January's, you're in the right place!

1) Evelyn Iona Gel Eyeliner - I don't typically like cream or gel liners (more of a pen gal, myself) but this one was actually very easy to work with. It does go on somewhat sheer at first but you can build it up as dark as you like and it dries quickly enough to avoid smudging but not so fast its hard to work with.

2) Kaia Naturals Bamboo Tapioca Beads - I already know i love powder style exfoliants or cleansers so it was no surprise i enjoyed this little tub too. Its definitely gentle enough to use daily on my combo/oily skin and leaves my pores feeling tight and smooth.

3) French Girl Rose Lip Polish - Perhaps my favorite part of this months box, the sugar gently scrubs away yucky flakes while the blend of gorgeous oils hydrate and soften my lips and the surrounding area. The full size has such gorgeous packaging that i might have to grab it once i've used this baby one up!

4) S.W. Basics Cream - I think i truly got a dud on this one because although it moisturizes beautifully, the smell is just something i can't get past and i'm not usually sensitive to smells at all. I'd definitely be interested in trying their other products to see how they compare and whether or not this was just a bad one.

As with every Petit Vour (or petits filous, as Adam calls them) box, i'm always stoked to try new brands and products then, very dangerously, browse their store for more.

Its such an awesome gift for yourself or someone you know trying to adopt a more vegan or natural lifestyle! Get yours here.

Last month's Petit Vour box was beautifully curated, let me tell you more.

  1.  Kani Petal Polish - at first glance i thought this was nail related but nope, its a sweet polishing face mask. Saving this for the end of a long day of travel to slough off the yuck and hydrate my skin at the same time.
  2. Mai Couture Blush Sheets - these genius little sheets are perfect to throw in your wallet to brighten up your complexion throughout the day. You know what i'm saving these for.... travel!
  3. Zabana Essentials Glow Stick - the first thing i noticed was the delicious nectarine scent and the second was how beautifully smooth it left my skin. Perfect for summer no-makeup days or anyone who wants to add a sheen to their skin.
  4. Blissoma Deodorant - a little strange to apply at first just because the product is flat but it goes on smooth, feels nourishing and has no scent to speak of.... oh, and neither did i :)

I always love that the PV items are a little higher end and this has to be my favorite one from them yet. You can get your own Petit Vour sub box here

If you're not into beauty yourself but know the person you're buying a gift for is; it can be hard to know where to start. In this situation (and many others, hello?), i think subscription boxes are an awesome idea.

Petit Vour
Probably one of the more luxury subscription boxes out there for animal lovers; PV ship you 4 products a month, they vary from luxury sample size to full size and i always find lots of new brands through them.

Their boxes are always gorgeously curated and they ship to the US and Canada for $15US or $23CA. As well as a subscription box service, you can also buy items from their store ranging from Matt & Nat bags to essential oils.

Videos here and here.

Vegan Cuts
VC have a great range of products in their subscription boxes varying from the very natural and simple to more luxurious items. They give you anywhere from 4-7 in each box and i'm always pumped to see the variety.

Their beauty boxes are $19.95 per month but do get cheaper the more you pay for in advance. They ship to the US, obviously but also Canada and Internationally for an additional fee (you can find all the info on their site).

They also have snack boxes if snacks are more your thing...  for the same price as the beauty box you get 7-10 different snack items and, holy crap, they are always spot on!

Videos on them here, here, here and most recently here

Goddess Provisions
"Monthly box with tools to nourish your inner goddess and grow your spiritual practice." As if that doesn't say enough about them? I adore this as an idea for a subscription box, they include such an amazingly weird mix of things from vegan mascaras and snacks to crystals and aromatherapy. I think we all probably know someone this would scream out to.

Their boxes are $35 and as yet i'm not sure if they'll eventually have a store to buy individual items or not because they're still very new!

I mention the Goddess Box here.

Love Goodly
Another vegan beauty box option is Love Goodly which you guys know i've loved a while now and this seemed like a good opportunity to clear up something a few of you asked about!

Prior to last month's box, subscribers received an email stating that there would be a product containing beeswax from a company they felt were actually doing a lot for the bee community by supporting the Save The Bees initiative and that if you wanted a vegan alternative they would gladly substitute the product for a vegan one.

I did talk to Love Goodly about their choice and they firmly stand by the product and what the company are doing for the bee population and they did assure me this was a one time only deal.

Regardless, LG offer a bimonthly box for $39.95 that gets cheaper the longer you subscribe for/prepay. They also have an awesome marketplace so you can buy your favorite items individually including food... mmmm.

See my videos on them here and here.

Feel free to share any others you might know of below!
For those who don't know, Petit Vour is a luxury, vegan beauty subscription box.

1) Rose Mira Sweet Coconut Body Butter

This has a beautiful texture and leaves skin soft and supple without any residue.

2) Earthbody Brighten Cleanser and Mask

A pale red-brown powder with a light, earthy scent. Works great as a cleanser and left my skin firmer but very soft, not tight. It can also be used as a weekly mask!

3) Harvey Prince Journey Fragrance

A summery scent thats still warming. Notes of clove, sandalwood & rose.

4) BWC Mineral Eyeliner in Soft Brown

A great shade to add definition without the starkness of black. Glides on easy but still retains enough stiffness to be precise!

5) Mini Me Gray Label Tangerine Lip Butter

Adorable packaging and lovely scent. Hydrates well but don't roll it up too far cause this stuff is very soft and will smudge all over your face!

Oh, just another subscription box unboxing & review.

My previous post about Petit Vour.

Petit Vour is a monthly, vegan, luxury beauty subscription box that i've been receiving for a couple of months now.
Generally i've been too excited to open it up and use everything in it but this month i exercised some restraint and took some unboxing pics for you guys.

Subscriptions are $15 a month and so far i've been really happy with it. I wasn't impressed with Birch Box when i had it but this is much more down my street; i'd rather have fewer products that are a decent sized and vegan rather than 15 tiny samples that get repeated every month.
