Workout Supplements- here's the scoop

Monday, February 09, 2015

A lot of you ask which workout supplements i recommend. Some of you understand they are just that, a supplement, where as i think some of you think they're a sneaky fast-track to a fit bod. While they can certainly help you along the way, i think its important to remember that there is NO ALTERNATIVE to a healthy, active lifestyle.

That said, these are the two powders i've used for years now that i don't see myself giving up any time soon; both of which are from Vega.

Vega Sport Sugar Free Energizer
Generally i avoid sugar free products at all costs because a lot of companies use artificial sweeteners instead, but not Vega. This energizer is sweetened with stevia and tastes delicious.

I've always gone for the lemon lime flavor but they also carry an acai berry one too. You just mix one of the tiny scoops with 8oz of water (i use a shaker bottle just because its easier) and drink it 20 minutes prior to your workout.

I use this 5 days a week prior to weight training and feel SO different to when i forget to make it. I'm able to concentrate better, lift heavier and not get tired so fast. I'm pretty intolerant to caffeine and just as sensitive to sugar so i'm very familiar with that jittery feeling some energizers can give you but i NEVER get it with this (unless i stupidly drink coffee around the same time).

When i took spin classes i always watched the clock and just couldn't wait for it to be over but every time i drank the Vega energizer i would push myself hard until the end and never watched the clock.

A blend of Green Tea, Panax Ginseng, Rhodiola and Turmeric provide you with antioxidants that support inflammation management, a non-jittery boost of mental and physical endurance and prevention of stress and fatigue.

Vega Sport Performance Protein
Protein powders can be a little daunting to pick one out of the crowd but since this protein powder provides a complete source of plant-based protein, it was a no-brainer.

Most protein powders you see in the store labeled as "isolates" should really just say "processed beyond belief" and are FULL of gross chemicals that your body uses up more energy just to break down... sort of defeats the purpose, right?

As Vega is completely plant based, your body has an easy old time digesting it and is able to use the protein without the additional stress of chemical crap. I aim to consume mine around 30-45 minutes after a workout (cardio and weights) and just mix one scoop with around 10oz of whichever non-dairy milk i'm using (usually half soy, half water for me but Adam prefers to use almond).

BCAA's (branched chain amino acids) found in Vega Sport Performance Protein are an important amino acid that your body can't make by itself so it needs to be ingested. These amino acids help your body to transition from a catabolic to an anabolic state after exercise, meaning your body changes from breaking down muscle to building muscle (which is what we want out of our workout after all).

The protein itself is made from whole grain brown rice, pea, alfalfa and saviseed proteins that provide a complete protein. Accompanied by L-Glutamine, these work to repair and build muscle and reduce recovery time; helping to alleviate that dreaded ache the next day.

I love Vega as a brand and always recommend them when people ask which plant-based supplements i recommend. After trying hemp, soy and other proteins, i've found these are the most effective AND most delicious.

Their chocolate or vanilla protein powders are my favorites but their berry option is great if you tend to mix your protein into a smoothie.

What are your must-have pre or post workout supplements or foods?

  1. Hey lady! I've been using Arbonne supplements for about 4 years now, and they've yielded amazing results for me. All their products are vegan and gluten-free, as well as sweetened with stevia. My must-haves are the chocolate protein shakes (20g of vegan, soy-free protein), and the energy fizz tabs for a pre-workout boost. The shake is the most delicious thing ever and isn't chalky at all. I've never tried Vega, but hear great things about it. Xx

  2. Yay, I'm glad you made this post. I've been thinking about getting the energizer one since I'm on this 8 week challenge and not motivated anymore so I'm sure this will since I don't want to take my husbands super "dump" (what I call it) :) <3
