What are the best practices and products to use to get that Summer glow year around?
Let just say not all products are created equal when it comes to achieving smooth skin especially when color is an issue. For all my dark skin girls out there, I sometimes struggle to get the results I want especially if those products are also non-toxic and vegan.

(editors note: can we just appreciate this gorgeous ray of sunshine that is Mika?)

Before we move on chatting about products recommendations and discuss what does what, let me tell you about myself. By now you should realize it is not the beautiful Rhian.

I am Michaelle, Rhian was so kind to invite me to her blog today. Isn’t she the best? (note: i swear i didn't make her say that) I am also a blogger @ethicalandchic.I love talking about food, makeup, and green beauty products. I am vegan, of course!

Since I love makeup and like any other girl, I always like to look my best, I tend to try out a lot of products. Sometimes it tends to get out of hand. My bank account sometimes looks like it has been on a-crackers-and-water diet only!

I for one love glowing skin all year around. Ashy skin is so out! After tons of trials and errors, I have a routine and a few products that not only make my skin look healthier but gives it a beautiful glow. Don’t worry, it’s nothing high maintenance! You are probably doing most of them already!

You want your best skin ever? Here are my top ways to get that Summer Glow now! Women of color friendly.

  • Realistically, good skin starts with what we put inside our body and our environment. If you are into eating dairy and no actual healthy food, you need to get on that shit like yesterday! Load your plates with greens foods, fruits, and vegetables. Eating them in season is cheaper, more accessible, and they taste better!
  • Drink plenty of water, get some appropriate shut eyes time and get your body moving. I personally do yoga and kettlebells. I also love walking and biking when the weather allows.
  • Also stay away from the harsh sun and stop touching your face! I am guilty of those last two. The warmth of the sun feels so good especially when I haven’t been out in a while, I like just to soak it all up like a lazy feline! That's why a great SPF is necessary.

What’s in your skincare and beauty routine?

To get that summer glow, I tend to favor products with simple ingredients, targeted toward my needs. No sulfates, hard perfumes, and pore-clogging ingredients.

I use a cleanser, a toner, an essence, a serum, and a moisturizer. Petit Vour has products for all these categories. They have samples available! I also browse Ulta, Sephora, and The Detox Market for new finds.

I am a strong believer in the virtues of acids (AHA, BHA). I use them all over my body. I find chemicals exfoliant give the skin a smoother appearance faster and long-lasting.

Some of Mika's top picks!

Products recommendations.

To get that summer glow year around while I keep my skin even, I use a tanning lotion. Yes, you heard me right! A tanning lotion helps me fake it until I make it! Tanning lotion does necessarily make your dark skin dark instead it evens out the complexion and hide imperfections like stretch marks, scars, etc... It’s not going to be perfect unless you already have great skin, but it will be close enough!

My go-to tanning lotion is the Loving Tan mousse. It applies evenly, leaves my skin smooth, and gives me that chocolate glow. I use the dark in Winter and the ultra-dark in Summer. Don’t forget to exfoliate, shave, and hydrate your skin the day before you use the Loving tan mousse for a perfect application!

You probably see the Fenty beauty lava body luminizer everywhere now! While it looks quite nice, I must say it has nothing on the Prtty Peaushun skin tight body lotion. It’s 100 percent natural, vegan, fragrance-free, non-toxic, paraben free, and gluten-free. It gives the skin a natural looking glow, no glitter chunks, no greasy residue. It’s also lightweight. I sometimes use it on my face as a primer before foundation and concealer for a natural, soft makeup look. It’s just so beautiful!

For bronzer, I usually use the 100 Percent Pure Cocoa Pigment Bronzer. It’s enough to warm up my face for a natural look. If I am looking for something dramatic, I use the Alima Pure Powder Foundation in C9. Just a little bit! The Au Naturale Organic Bronzer in Warm is a great one too. It never makes me breakout.

For highlight, I use the Au Naturale Luminous Crème Bronzer Stick in Trailblazer. A little goes a long way. Always make sure it’s well blended to avoid weird patchy looking spot of glitters. For a smooth and natural look, I always reach for Antonym Baked Blush in Copper. That’s a holy grail product right here ladies! The Milani Baked Bronzer in 05 Soleil is quite similar and more affordable although a bit more shimmery.

I tend to stick with what works for my complexion and skin type. I am pretty sure you have different products in your arsenal and a different approach when it comes to getting that summer glow. What are your go-to products to get that Summer glow? What is your skincare routine? Let’s keep the conversation going in the comment below!

An essence has to be the most bougie skincare item, right? Well, I tried one out and here are my thoughts!

Until coming across this essence, the only other ones i was aware of were typically VERY expensive Korean brands so i was stoked to see one from a cruelty free company that was also vegan.

Some of the product benefits Juice Beauty boasts:

  • Soothes skin and reduces the appearance of redness with alkylamides isolated and extracted from the Zanthoxylum fruit.
  • Leaves a thin veil of moisture on the skin from polysaccharides of the tamarind seed.
  • Reduces appearance of pores, dark spots & discoloration.
  • Prepares skin to absorb serum & moisturizer efficiently.

First of all i feel like we need to talk about the scent, last night i even insisted Adam smell my face so he could confirm what it smelled like. Okay, so imagine all of the green ingredients in a summery gin cocktail... mint, apple, cucumber; all things fresh and gardeny. THAT is what this smells like and it makes me want a gin drink every time i use it: morning or night (i'd just like to say that i haven't partaken in a single gin drink, however).

To apply, i pour a few drops on my fingertips then apply to my skin in a sort of pressing motion in between my toner (if i use one) and serums. The handy video about the product on their site explains this is the best way to apply as well as going over exactly what an essence is.

Not only am i obsessed with this based on the smell (i'm sniffing it rn), i've definitely noticed this has boosted my skin's hydration level and has my skin feeling more plump and firm and looking more bright. I wasn't anticipating falling in love with this essence and adding another step into my skincare routine but its quickly become my favorite product to apply.

If you're looking into brightening products in general, this whole line has some awesome ingredients and i also enjoy the Full Strength Peel (you can literally FEEL this working) and the Age Defy Moisturizer.

A lot of skincare products might find their way into my routine briefly but needless to say, this one has become a permanent resident and i adore it!

Allow me to introduce you to one of the most luxurious skin care brands i've ever experienced in both appearance and ingredients. Even after the first application, I knew there was something impressive about these products.

The pricing appears high but after reading up on the ingredients, the science behind the brand and using them, i'd definitely recommend trying them if you're able to. I would have reviewed these sooner but they so quickly became a morning and night ritual for me that it slipped my mind i hadn't already shared them with you.

Antioxidant Dew
This, combined with the Beauty Elixir were the first Kypris items I tried. It contains 26 active natural ingredients including LOTS of antioxidants; Sea Algae to hydrate without blocking pores, Rose Extracts to soothe and tone, Tamanu for healing and cell renewal and many others. Read a little more about it and the science behind it here.

The antioxidant dew is a white serum that sunk into my skin fast and left it feeling plump, healthy and looking glowy without any residue. It has an extremely light, herby scent that dissipates quickly. I apply this in the morning only.

It made for a great base under makeup and didn't interfere with any products i used over it but actually helped when it came to blending out my Anastasia foundation over the top of it (typically a fairly dry product).

I'd say the product description of "Quench and Glow" is pretty damn accurate and even as someone with oily/ combo skin, the hydration it gave me was perfect and as mentioned, left no residue or oily look to the skin, just a plump, hydrated glow. Because of this, i'd say it would be suitable for most skin types but if you have a lot of breakouts, you might consider the Clearing Serum instead.

All in all, a great daytime serum/moisturizer either used by itself or layered underneath the Beauty Elixir for a little extra hydration (i recommend mixing the two and trying them as a combo if you're able to).

Moonlight Catalyst
When i heard this was an alternative to retinol products, i knew i needed to try it. This utilizes fermented pumpkin enzymes to soften and exfoliate the skin and i definitely noticed my skin feels incredibly soft, smooth and plump the morning after using this without any irritation that comes with traditional retinol. Again, you can read more about how it works here.

This one contains 18 active natural ingredients including the Pumpkin Enzymes i mentioned; Epidermal Growth Factor which is a plumping and renewing peptide, Sea Algae again to calm and hydrate, Xylitylglucoside which is a precursor to my favorite: Hyaluronic Acid as well as Neroli to soothe skin and encourage sleep.

The consistency is more like a gel and absorbs into the skin quickly with a slight cooling effect (or is this just me?). The scent is slightly more noticeable than the Antioxidant Dew and i think it may be the Neroli giving it its scent but as with the other serum, it does dissipate quickly. This one is only to be applied at night time.

If you have issues with breakouts, texture, fine lines or just dull looking skin, i really think you will love this product. It gave me similar results to retinol but without any of the flaking or adjustment period that usually comes along with them.

Beauty Elixir 1
1000 Roses Beauty Elixir was, i think the first product i came across when i heard of Kypris and i must admit, the price tag made me gasp. The Beauty Elixirs are very concentrated products that you need to use VERY little of... although, i will say you'll be tempted to use more after trying it so be sure and keep it to just 2 or 3 drops as thats plenty.

Beauty Elixir 1 is intended for dry skin and i believe is the most moisturizing option. It contains Bulgarian Rose to combat acne and soften skin, CoQ10 to diminish any sun damage, Vitamins C and E to boost collagen and many more you can read about here.

To apply this i either mix with one of the above serums or apply over the top. I've also applied just half a drop to any dermatitis patches and have found it to be very soothing and have great effects on it. Although this is an oil, it doesn't leave and residue on the skin and is really easily absorbed and seems to quench any dry patches in a long-lasting way. Another great one under makeup and can be used morning and night.

So definitely a pricey product but it is, without doubt, the best facial oil i've used.

As a brand over all, i adore what Kypris stands for, not only for their holistic, high-performance products but i love that their ingredients are sustainably grown and each product suggests that you "kindly offer yourself honest compliments" as you apply. Just beautiful.

Do let me know if you'd like to see these or any other Kypris products reviewed and demo'd on my channel and if you have any other questions, do leave them below.

note: products were sent for consideration and affiliate links are used. Rest assured, my reviews are always honest and i'd never promote a product i didn't believe in

I love skin care, you might love skin care too, so lets look at some!

Since trying out Paula's Choice Salicylic Acid and Retinol products, i've quickly become reliant on them for happy, clear skin. Lots of you even noticed the changes in my skin and asked questions on my Paula's Choice recommendations so here are my top 5 picks from their site!

I do have a link you can use for $10 off your first order so click via this link to set that up and don't forget to sign into/ up for ebates because they have 4% cash back on PC right now.

CLEAR Extra Strength Anti-Redness Exfoliating Solution With 2% Salicylic Acid
This is the salicylic product i started experimenting with (i talk about it here) and and let me tell you, this stuff is pretty potent so use it sparingly and only where you need it until you figure out your skin's tolerance or you may end up getting dry and flaky.

The liquid itself has some slip to it which i'd imagine is the "anti-redness" portion of the product in action because it does feel like a protective serum finish, almost.

I used this on a cotton pad over my t zone where i have enlarged or blocked pores as well as a spot treatment on any volcanoes brewing under the surface! Salicylic acid or "BHA" is especially good for this as its oil soluble so can penetrate oil-filled pores, allowing it to reach deeper than AHAs, for example. Read more on the differences here.

SKIN PERFECTING 2% BHA Gel Exfoliant

Since my skin is much improved after using the above product, i switched to something a little more gentle and this product has been perfect to gently exfoliate my skin and keep pores clearer without any irritation.

I use this daily all over my face and just use one pump on finger tips over clean skin in the morning, giving it a chance to sink in a little before continuing with any serums or moisturizers.

RESIST Intensive Wrinkle-Repair Retinol Serum
The first retinol product i tried was the Retinol Booster which i mixed with a hyaluronic serum; although i liked this combo and did see it's effects, i'm glad i tried this because its AMAZING.

This serum feels so silky and great on the skin without feeling suffocating and i do feel i've noticed more of a change in my skin using this vs the booster/serum combo.

Fine lines seem even shallower and the overall texture of my skin feels smoother and plumper.

I do think the combination of using BHA in the morning and Retinol at night has made my skin more capable of purging any zits of blocked pores as it dries them up quicker and heals them quicker too. The combination has worked wonders for me.

RADIANCE Renewal Mask
This is something i picked up on a whim and have fallen quickly in love with. This overnight mask seems to have improved my skin's hydration, faded any marks left from blemishes and just overall leaves me with clearer, softer skin in the mornings.

I probably use this 2-3 times a week or more often during travel stress as the last step in my night time routine. This would be awesome on long haul flights as its clear and you can reap the benefits of a mask without... looking like you're wearing a mask!

Hello Gorgeous Dual Magnifying Mirror
Lastly, the most recent thing i picked up from Paula's Choice is this chic compact mirror for travel! I don't know about you guys but i really struggle with doing my full face of makeup in the tiny mirrors that come in compact products so wanted something a little bigger but still travel friendly.
Beware of the magnifying side, the 10X magnification can be a little scary!

Some Paula's Choice products are available as samples and they do have an entire travel size section here too.
If ever you're unsure if products are vegan, you can check their list of non-vegan items here and their customer service is always super helpful if you go to them with ingredient questions or just general queries too.

What are your favorite Paula's Choice products?

Welcome to my first post in The Face Mask Chronicles, today i'll be covering the Derma E Purifying Charcoal Mask; telling you what the brand says about the product as well as what i think about it!

What they say:
"Purifying 2-in-1 Charcoal Mask deeply detoxifies skin of harmful micropollutants in two ways: (1) Natural clays infused with Kimarine® Wakame, Bladerwrack and Activated Charcoal lift out dirt, oil and bacteria to decongest pores as the mask dries; (2) Apricot Seed Powder exfoliates away dead skin cells and captured debris upon removal. Kaolin and Bentonite Clays absorb excess oils and impurities, relieving skin congestion. Kimarine® Wakame is a potassium-rich, magnesium-rich seaweed that is clinically proven to protect skin against environmental pollutants (exhaust fumes, cigarette smoke, heavy metals). Bladderwrack is an antioxidant-rich, mineral-rich seaweed known for its water-binding properties, supporting healthy skin hydration and nourishment. Activated Charcoal, known for absorbing 100 to 200 times its weight in impurities, purges pores of deeply rooted toxins, then Apricot Seed Powder gently exfoliates away micropollutants. Ideal for oily, active or urban skin types, even safe for reactive skin (minimal ingredients and allergy-tested), used this formula once or twice a week for skin that looks dramatically fresher, healthier and purely glowing. "

Application:
This is definitely a product i like to apply with my fingers so i can work it into any problem areas and get an even covering. It takes between 10 and 20 minutes to dry, for me, and it will start to get tight but not uncomfortable or tingly/ doesn't sting.
(l-r: right after applying and 15 minutes later)

Removal:
I like to wash it off in the shower to avoid getting a black mess all over the bathroom. I start by massaging the dry mask with wet hands to make the most of the exfoliating properties while i'm removing it. I keep re-wetting my hands and massaging until most of the mask has gone, then give it a good few splashes of water to remove the rest. Finish with a cold rinse then continue with the rest of my skin care.

In Conclusion... :
I probably use this mask once a week or so or any time i have a break out (makes a great spot treatment too) or might've been wearing more makeup than usual/ not removed it fully the night before.

Its definitely very purifying and i've never found it to be drying but perhaps if it was used too often it could cause dryness in more sensitive skin types.

A great staple mask to have in your arsenal for times when you just want all the bad stuff drawn out of your pores and some gentle exfoliation to reveal a fresh layer of skin.

As a spot treatment it works really well to help dry the zit out as well as to use after you might've picked at your skin to be sure you got all the yuck out.

(l-r: skin immediately after removal and after a light moisturizer application)

Most of us have experienced breast cancer in some way, whether its a personal diagnosis, or that of a loved one; breast cancer is still alarmingly common.

Here are some of my favorite brands who've made a point of showing support for breast cancer victims and survivors this month.

Dose Of Colors

This gorgeous pink duo supports Dose Of Colors in making a donation of $30,000 to City Of Hope. The duo is vegan, cruelty free, gluten free and paraben free. Gorgeous!

House Of Lashes

This awesome "Knockout" lash not only looks bomb on the eye but HOL are also donating $1 of each pair sold to Keep A Breast Foundation.

Sigma

Sigma are also donating $1 of each sale of their signature pink items to cancer research at the University of Minnesota. This includes these awesome brush cleaning helpers.

Jane Iredale

Each year, Jane Iredale create limited edition products and donate 100% of profits to Living Beyond Breast Cancer. This year you can choose between their "Smell The Roses" hydration spray and their "Lemongrass Love" hydration spray. Both sound delicious to me.

1:Face Watches

1Face support many different charities with their different watches but they have two that support breast cancer! One priced at $39 and one at $77; both gorgeous.

Hopefully this little round up will help some of you find some awesome purchases to support an incredible cause.

Lots of you seem to like the lazy b**** meals i post to snapchat so i decided to turn it into a series. Heres my vegan primavera!

Ingredients:

  • Pasta for 2 (i recommend spaghetti or bucatini and grabbing one of these if you're bad at guessing how much to use)
  • 1/2 Red onion, chopped
  • 4+ Garlic cloves, pressed
  • 10 Mushrooms peeled and sliced
  • 1 Zucchini sliced
  • 12 Cherry tomatoes quartered
  • Vegan parmesan
  • Olive oil
  • Vegan butter
  • Braggs Seasoning
  • Red Pepper Flakes
  • Salt & pepper to taste
(these amounts are estimated because i just eyeball everything)

How to:
  1. Put your water heating for the pasta and your oil and butter heating in a separate pan on medium heat.
  2. Add onion and garlic to your butter/oil mix, stirring occasionally until the onion becomes transparent.
  3. Add pasta to water and set timer (usually around 10 min if dried)
  4. Put a couple of pinches of chili flakes and braggs seasoning in with the onion/garlic before adding the mushrooms and zucchini too.
  5. Once the mushrooms and zucchini have started to soften, add in your cherry tomatoes.
  6. Strain pasta and add to the veggies with your vegan parmesan and turn the heat up to medium/high, stirring continuously for 2-3 minutes
  7. Serve. Add more parm if you like. Eat it!
I love a good YouTuber collab, especially when its between one of my favorite brands and my favorite fairy, Tashina of Logical Harmony. Lets see what goodies are in her ELF collection.

Beautifully Bare Lip Tint in Cheers to Champagne - this is a gorgeous peachy shimmer shade. Great to throw in your bag for quick touch ups and makes your lips look so juicy and plump!

I've never tried this product before so i'm stoked it was included.

Beautifully Bare Satin Lipstick in Touch of Nude - another product i've not tried and was impressed by.

A pretty brown-toned nude that would suit many and i LOVE the sleek and simple packaging.

Prism Eyeshadow Palette in Sunset - an amazing accent palette for those of use who already have a lot of matte nudes.

Add a shimmer accent to the lid area, brow bone, inner corner or even lower lash line for a sparkle in your eye!

Blush in Twinkle Pink - one of my favorite Tashina moments is her getting tongue tied talking about this blush, you can enjoy it here.

The blush color is gorgeous (again, you can see it in action in the link) and has a very wearable shimmer. I'm so glad she included this because it makes me chuckle every time.

Baked Eyeshadow in Enchanted - this has been dubbed as a great dupe for champagne pop, whether thats true or not i do love this for a golden champagne glow on the eyes or cheeks!

Perfect for a bronzey summer look!

I was lucky enough to get my mitts on this NCLA "You Can't Swim With Us" set at Beauty Con LA and had to share this beautiful mermaidy palette with you!

The collection is comprised of 2 glitter polishes, 2 holographic glitter polishes and one gorgeous iridescent.

All of the NCLA polishes i've tried have the same amazing formula, great brush and speedy drying time. Their products are all vegan, cruelty free, non-toxic and free from formaldehyde, DBP, toluene, formaldehyde resin and camphor.

I decided to go for "Seashell Dress" across all nails and then accent 2 with "Glistening Scales" which truly does look like gorgeous pearly scales!

What are you loving on your nails lately?

Ever been curious as to what i eat in a day? Let me show you! Its vegan, its filling and its delicious.
