Skincare for Eczema/ Dermatitis-Prone Skin

Wednesday, February 17, 2016

Eczema and Dermatitis can be really frustrating to try and treat, especially when they're on your face. Here are some of my tried and true favorites to use during flare-ups that are gentle on troubled skin yet equally as effective.

Cleansers

Toners

Treatments

Moisturizers

Mary's Tips:
  • Take Vitamin D
  • Eliminate or cut down on dairy product intake
  • Take Flax oil
  • Take Vitamin C to help keep Histamine in check
  • Use Undaria Argan Oil on your face
  • Use the Undaria Algae Oil on your body as well as the Anti-Aging Body Balm.  I have mixed both together & sometimes I do use this same concoction on my face.
  • Make sure to keep your skin really hydrated, constantly. I carry lotion with me wherever I go, so that I can always put it on, if my skin starts to feel uncomfortable.

Suzanne's Tips:
  • Cleansing with a mild foaming cleanser is a must to help prevent further irritation of the skin. Typical cleansers may be too harsh for this skin type.
  • If exfoliation is needed, the cleansing sponge is an excellent way to gently exfoliate the area. This is good to do 1 to 2 times per week, again very gently, to help prevent build up of the skin.
  • Finally, it is very important to apply moisture while the skin is still damp. After cleansing, pat dry with a clean towel, and then apply moisture like Skin Savior Balm (does contain beeswax) or Vitamin E Eye Balm, to the area immediately. On days that it is particularly aggravated, you can apply Skin Savior Balm or Vitamin E Eye Balm to the area before showering so that the warm water does not further dry out the area.

Big sis' Tips:
  • Traditional chemical emollient type products can suffocate skin and make it worse. Eczema is an autoimmune reaction or according to Chinese medicine toxins being forced out. I find light, natural oil based lotions work best for me. Charity pot or dream cream, both from Lush, when it's bad.
  • For scalp dermatitis I have most luck with Jason antidandruff 2-in-1 (think it's salicylic acid that does the job), other anti dandruff types make it worse. Coconut oil and tea tree help too.
  • Steroid creams have their place but generally act like a lid on a boiling pot. They suppress the symptom not the cause.
  • Diet can have a big impact.
  • Consider seeing a Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner or Acupuncturist.

  1. What products would you recommend to help eliminate sebum, which I have problems with on my nose, especially in the creases on the sides of my nose?
